Absoluut vijf sterren voor deze nieuwe roman van Giordano. Hij bekoorde me al met zijn vorige romans, maar deze is toch wel een topper. Het is zo Italiaans: vol van gevoelens, passies, fantasie en ook verscheurdheid en tragiek. Een Griekse tragedie, waarbij de "hemel" bepaalt over het lot van de personages. Een grootse opera. Wanneer Teresa (de ik-persoon in het boek) als jong meisje in het Zuiden van Italië (streek van Brindisi) met haar vader en haar oma de zomers doorbrengt, leert ze de drie jongens kennen die in de "masseria" daarnaast wonen. Nicola, Tommaso en de mysterieuze Bern, die een cruciale rol gaat spelen in de roman. Hierdoor begint voor haar een nieuw "leven", van onbezorgdheid, idealisme en vriendschap tot verdriet en tragiek. Cesare en Floriana, de "ouders" van de drie jongens, houden er zeer religieuze principes op na, zeker Cesare dan. Bern is de rebel, hij leest Max Stirner ("De enige en zijn eigendom") en verzet zich op die manier tegen de principes van zijn vader. p. 104: "Hij recapituleerde voor zichzelf wat er na het lezen van dat boek door zijn hoofd speelde. Hij noemde het "De enige", en pas later ontdekte ik dat dat niet de hele titel was, maar Bern realiseerde zich niet meer wat ik wel of niet kon weten, en het interesseerde hem ook weinig. Hij begon te ondertekenen met "De Grote Egoïst". Midden op het blad schreef hij met koeienletters: "ONZE OPDRACHT IS DE BESTORMING VAN DE HEMEL!" Hij schreef: "We moeten de hemel verslinden!" (...) En verder zegt Bern: "Het lag niet aan mij dat ik niet kon bidden (...). Nu snap ik het. Ik zat niet fout. God is gewoon een verzinsel. Alleen wie leeft, heeft gelijk".
En vooral dat laatste zinnetje blijkt cruciaal om deze roman goed te begrijpen, om te begrijpen wat er tussen de regels verteld wordt... (zoals steeds is de psychologie bij Giordano heel subtiel en moet je "raden" of "voelen" wat er zich tussen de personages afspeelt...).
En het leven blijkt blind te zijn: p. 277: "... dus zo kiest het leven. Het kiest zonder te kiezen, het ontluikt op een bepaalde plek en niet op een andere, zomaar."
Het verhaal hier helemaal gaan vertellen zou een ware zonde zijn voor wie het nog moet ontdekken. Je moet deze roman alleen erg aandachtig lezen, en veel belang hechten aan kleine details, die verder in het verhaal een sleutel blijken te zijn (af en toe eens terugbladeren kan ook, natuurlijk). Het einde is bijna een mythe uit de Oudheid, je waant je bijna in de Hades...
Wat een roman, zeg. Dat mooi verhaal, dat echt in je ziel blijft plakken, die prachtige dialogen, die sfeer, ... Geniaal!

I truly wish I could have read this book in its original Italian form. I had the sense throughout the story that a lot was not quite captured as it was meant to be in translation. This was a difficult book for me to get through, because of all the conflicting emotions it aroused in me. Never really developed a true liking for any of the characters, and I had a hard time with the distance I felt from the writing and characters, yet there was much that counterbalances these shortcomings. As much as I didn't like the characters that's what made it all the more captivating and real for me. No one is all good or all bad. For all we can admire about Bern- his passionate ideals about earth and nature and his devotion and determination, he was, as we all are, a flawed human being. All the characters are flawed and frustrating, and despite this you want to accompany them on their journey through life and through their quest for meaning- that is the beauty of this book.

The sequence of events from the second half of the book, and the last part part of the book are flipped. It made the timing of the events in the book a little confusing. It was kind of interesting towards the beginning, but the second half of the book really dragged and I almost didn’t want to finish it. The characters don’t really seem to change much, and to be honest I found Teresa to be very shallow and annoying. I would have loved to see her grow and change as time went on and she got older, but there was very little of that. Honestly, none of the other characters seemed to change from when they were younger. Overall, it’s not a bad read, but it’s definitely not something I would reread again.

Terzo approccio a Giordano e a questo punto penso anche ultimo: tra me e lui la scintilla non vuole scattare. Non so come, ma ogni suo libro mi ricorda altri e in questo caso, a parte il barone rampante (Calvino, scontato), mi viene in mente anche due di due (De Carlo, che comunque non mi è piaciuto). Sarà l'ambientazione troppo bucolica, che però si limita ad una masseria e alberi e grotte, senza mai scendere troppo nei dettagli; sarà che i personaggi risultano tutti antipatici e nonostante la loro evoluzione rimangono sempre uguali in fondo; sarà che lo stile risulta un po' borioso, si percepisce il bisogno di trattare tempi importanti, ma leggendo sembra quasi che tutti i protagonisti debbano essere impegnati per poter avere qualcosa da dire, e dopo un po' la cosa infastidisce. Sarà anche che gli sbalzi temporali, inseriti senza una continuazione logica, rendono la costruzione del quadro un po' più complicata di quanto fosse necessario, e sarà che a volte sono inserite cose senza il minimo contesto, che rendono surreale la narrazione, ma non sono sicura fosse voluto. Insomma, poteva essere un buon libro, invece l'ho trovato decisamente troppo lungo e mi è sembrato più che altro un esercizio di stile dell'autore.
