I love, love, love this little book. Amina is a Pakistani American girl who has just started middle school. There is a small storyline about vandalism at her mosque and there are lots of details about her family's culture and religion and the occasional conflict between them and her very traditional uncle, visiting from Pakistan. But overall the book isn't really About Being Muslim. It's just a story about a middle school girl who happens to be Muslim, who's going through all the regular middle school things everyone goes through - changing friendships, figuring out who you are, finding your voice. Some lovely scenes of interfaith communities. It makes me happy to know this book exists.

A beautiful, educational story that would have benefited from being longer. The build up was great but the climax and conclusion were too rushed - the entire ending could have been explored in much more detail.

I received this book in a Goodreads giveaway.

I enjoyed this perspective of America. It can be hard to imagine what another person goes through every day. From religion to cultural pressure, it was interesting to see the every day through another person's perspective.

Very simple story and a predictable ending. I enjoyed it nonetheless.

I would have loved this one as a young reader. Amina struggles with many topics including making her parents proud, processing friend drama, being a good friend even when you make mistakes, and dealing with an event of religious/ethnic persecution. Amina has to learn to be true to herself and overcome her fears of performing. This one is a slow paced book with rich characters and relatable struggles. There are many things here to unpack and discuss.

This was a good read. I wish the big thing that happened hadn’t been revealed on the flap - it didn’t happen until 3/4 of the way through the book.
