This is clearly the year of Murakami for me. This being the fifth of his books I've read this year, this collection of short stories leaves me pondering the meaning of my own life and my circumstances- much like his other works.
I started reading Murakami when I was a sophomore in college and now that I'm older, I'm giving his novels/ short stories a re-read with more life behind me and I'm identifying with more of the themes given my age about identity and the possibilities of the roads not taken.
I love the fantastic elements of the stories, particularly Super-Frog saves Tokyo. The stories are short, and it's a quick read. the hardest part is not trying to read the whole thing in one day and actually sitting with the stories so that they digest.

3.75 ⭐️ a collection of short stories that center an earthquake in Kobe, Japan. reading this felt like a lucid dream. i particularly loved “honey pie,” as it felt inspirational for Tomorrow Tomorrow and Tomorrow. great diving point for new Murakami readers.

A lovely collection of short stories. Moving and mundane in the way Murakami has perfected. Not quite supernatural, and not quite simply strange, these stories are as simple and as complex as real life.

Beautiful book. I wasn’t immediately hooked, I won’t lie. It took a story or two to really fall in love with the writing. I picked up this book having never read a Murakami book before, I was in for such a ride. The talent involved in winding these completely opposite stories with wildly different themes and messages around a single event is just insane. If you decide you want to pick up this book, if it’s your first book from him, my one advice is to keep your mind as open as you can. All of the stories (with maybe an exception of the first?) captured me fully. The writing is beautiful yet easy to understand. Very impactful read, definitely earned its 5 stars.

6 stories set in the aftermath of japan’s 1995 kobe earthquake, where everyday lives are shaken by subtle but surreal disturbances—think of it as murakami at his introspective and quietly strange best.

Ufo in kushiro •
Landscape with flatiron
All god's children can dance
Thailand •
Super frog saves tokyo
Honey pie
