Library loan got returned while I was in the middle of a poetry section that wasn’t as engaging so I called it. But really liked it tonally otherwise, an interesting experiment. On a micro language level, beautiful and crazy in a beautiful way, but on a macro structural level a bit much, crazy in a disconnected and overwhelming way (though very, very possible I didn’t give it enough of a chance to see it pull together). Honestly, maybe I just don’t care that much about pregnancy and kids. I think this would feel so much more special to someone who had different life experiences.

tedious drivel. had nothing remotely interesting or insightful to say about motherhood, the work of being pregnant and giving birth, or relations between men and women as parents. hated how it misunderstood marx too. also found it deeply telling how often it implicitly asserted "this is a bad book" lmao. you said it not me! but i'll repeat it: worst book i've read this year

In the same family as a ghost in the throat, memoir/lyrical essay about mothering, body horror of pregnancy and nursing, humanity and wholeness alongside parenthood and the ultimate absorption into another being, the inherent (primal) unfairness of parenthood in patriarchy. The red room of the body. These are worthwhile paths to walk. I want to hear many people conceptualize themselves through the drastic adjustment to pregnancy and delivery and motherhood. I especially want to hear about it from writers, who become themselves through their work.
