I picked up Newsletter Ninja as another author who wrote a non-fiction I had read recommended it. I like newsletters (and sign-up for way too many of them) and with a title as Newsletter Ninja and that cover I knew I had to read this. And I am glad I picked it up as I not only enjoyed reading it, but it also was a very informative book.

I really like the newsletter style that Tammi Labrecque recommends in this book and also notice some of the author newsletter I like do some of the things she explains here, whether intentional or not. And it reminds me of how sometimes something an author shares about themselves or a book can make me even more likely to buy their book. Having said that I do think this style might not be for everyone, but even so I think almost everyone will learn something from this book. As there are lots of tips, tricks, ideas and information about all things newsletters.

Newsletter Ninja talks about the whole newsletter process. From setting up a newsletter, the onboarding process, to the actual newsletters, newsletter subscribers, how to get subscribers and how to keep them, but also a bit about re-engagement and when to remove subscriber. And ofcourse her newsletter philosophy of selling yourself and connecting with fans and how to do so. I like how to the point the whole book is and she has a pleasant writing style. I had fun reading the book and feel like I learned a lot. I even got some new ideas for my tour company author newsletter.

The book also had a very uplifting and encouraging feel and while reading it I really felt like what she was saying makes sense and I could see why her technique works for newsletter and why. I also notice some author newsletter I am subscribed to who do some of the things she outlined and realized that's part of the reason why I like their newsletter. It gave me a better insight in some newsletter techniques too, which was quite interesting.

To summarize: I really enjoyed reading this book and it was very informative too. While not for everyone, I think most authors can still learn a few things from this book. I personally really like this author's newsletter philosophy and I realized some of the author newsletter I really like use some of her techniques. Besides the actual newsletter technique/ philosophy, this book talks about the basics from starting your newsletter to the actual newsletter, getting subscribers, cookies and also things like re-engagement and removing subscribers. Everything you want to know about newsletters is in here basically. If you want to change up your newsletter, learn more about newsletter or get some new ideas to try out for your newsletter I would definitely recommend this book and I think it's a great resource.

I suspect that I might benefit more from the next book in the series or taking the actual course. That said, it's not because the information presented isn't valuable, timely, or something that any author (traditional or self-published) shouldn't keep in mind to optimize and grow their newsletter. It's just that at a high level, most things in play are established best practices.

That said, there are some actionable tips and tricks as well as specifics that really help to reinforce the concepts and provide clarity. And they're delivered in a conversational and approachable tone that I wish more of the non-fiction/how-to books I read adopted. It's like sitting down with a trusted friend to learn about something they know.

I don't regret the purchase at all. In fact, on the Kindle "What's Next" screen, I picked up the next book the moment I finished this one. If you're new to newsletters (or have one but don't understand why it isn't working), this book is a great place to start figuring out your foundation and creating a plan that should lead to success. If you're looking to min-max an already-successful newsletter, maybe not so much.

Now I’m ready to Kick It Up a notch!

This book was a delightful read, but I also found it massively helpful. Before reading this book, newsletters felt like a gargantuan task that I could never conquer. Now, They still feel huge, but now I’m also armed with new knowledge. I think I’m ready to be a ninja. Thank you, Tammi! And for heaven’s sake, how do I sign up to become your freaking subscriber?

This book is the real deal, filled with wisdom gleaned from experience. There is zero random fluff in this book. I listened to the audiobook but I'm getting the e-book, too, because I will be referring to this over and over. The number-one newsletter guide. Don't even try sending out newsletters without learning from Tammi!

A useful book mainly for all the resources and links that are included. But I can't stress enough that author mailing lists should be the main priority only for authors with at least several (three) published books. Reason: repeat sales and "sell-through," which means enticing readers with a freebie such as the first book in a series. Once they've read book one, many are likely to buy book two, perhaps most of those readers will buy book three, etc.

The author gives good suggestions for providing other freebies (she calls them cookies). But keep in mind that for writers, the best freebie is almost always something you've written such as a short story, character history, prequel or chapters that were "killed darlings."

Therefore, the best audience for this book are writers who are well into their careers and have published at least three or more books so they have a viable reason to spend time, money, and effort generating a large and active email list.
