The Rise had a gripping storyline, diverse characters and an insane twist. The book had me on the edge of my seat and unable to put it down (it is 2am and I started it at 12:30am).
Although this book made me lose sleep, I am thoroughly impressed with the writing style and the captivating way it made me feel like I had to know how it ended.
This was the first book of Ian Rankin's works that I had ever read and I already want tonread more.

A book I heard about via a podcast and I really liked the concept of it being an ebook only. It being a short book also helped as I had not finished some other books recently.

The story and set up is very neat and drops you straight into an investigation. I liked how quickly I got my bearings and was surprised by how soon I had made opinions about different characters (though I never really liked the central characters). The book is well paced and keeps steady until the end when I wanted to rush to figure it all out.

In the best way, this book gave me a similar feeling to when I used to read Nancy Drew books as a teenager.

This short story has a great sense of location with its posh address and shifty residents! I really liked DS Gish as a character.

There are way too many characters stuffed into this 85 page story, and not enough dialogue tags, but after recently reading some heavier fare, a simply murder mystery procedural was still an enjoyable balm —though that does sound funny to say, considering the subject matter.
