I think this book was too smart for me. For the first half, I was really enjoying it. Then the second half happened, and I was lost for most of it.

I nearly gave up on this book at around 60% and man I wish I had.

A found footage haunted asylum ghost hunter story seemed like it would be an immersive experience conjuring some chills, however it read like a made for tv movie written by someone who has never met people before.

The thing that bothered me the most were the journal entries during media res moments. Another bothering thing was when they arrived in the labyrinth created by supernatural forces they went to sleep??? Whattt???

Jessica was a selfish idiot and I regret giving a shit about her at the beginning, Claire’s character started acting out and I don’t believe the type of person she was would have behaved like she did. Claire and Matt’s relationship was sickly and I had to skim read her final few journal entries because it made me gag.

I think the found footage thing was a gimmick and it didn’t come together very well. The only thing I appreciated was the imagery of the spooky things was well written and easy to picture. And the physical book itself was nice to hold.

Maybe it’s because I’m British but this book was cringe.

This was a great read/listen.  I read along with the book while listening to the audiobook.  The audiobook has a full cast of characters with music and sound effects that really made my enjoyment that much more.  It was mysterious and a little creepy.  I was hoping to be freaked out, but not so much.  I was, however, completely immersed in the story.  I cared about (and hated) the characters and was invested in what happened to them.   I will definitely check out more from the author.

I was looking for a scary read for the Halloween season, and unfortunately I didn't find that in Episode 13. The plot and character interactions were interesting enough and the mystery was relatively satisfying, but there was no building tension leading up to the "scares", and I just didn't feel immersed enough in the setting to really feel the tension.

This book does feel similar to House of Leaves, but I found it much less annoying to interact with. I could not get into the gimmicky interactive narrative of House of Leaves, and it was much easier to enjoy the mystery and atmosphere of Episode 13.

Overall it was a decent read, just not the scare I was looking for and expecting.
