Finished this in a day - and I really enjoyed it! I know some didn't, and some thought of this as being inspired by Cinder but I didn't seem much resemblance between the two and thought it was a pretty excellent retelling of Cinderella in a new way, adding some elements of steampunk, or at least I thought so. But for those looking for a romantic story, re-read that description and brace yourself - .

If you're looking for the traditional romance in fairytale retellings this isn't the book for you. It's more a coming of age story about a girl gaining independence and making a life for herself. It was interesting enough although not one of my favorites. I could really relate to Mechanica. I think she was well written. I think I didn't like it as much only based on a personal preference for dialogue and relationships. Mechanica was isolated and alone for much of the book. It's full of her thoughts and daily activities. It is worth the read though. I'm glad I read it. The authors voice is well done.
I like that the author advocated (or seemed to) for girls in STEM, without putting down the arts or other crafts like sewing. She seemed to have an appreciation for both.

Did not pass my 50 page rule. It had an interesting first chapter but became dull soon afterwards.

That was delightful. As usual, I'm a sucker for fairy tale adaptations, but in this version of Cinderella, the girl saves herself with her own hard work (and a little help from her friends, and just a little magic), without relying on a fairy godmother or a handsome prince to save the day.
There were a few occasional clunky bits of writing, but I can overlook that in favor of the discussion of how girls can be strong and smart and independent, and how you can choose your own family if the one you're born into treats you badly.
I will never forgive the Steps for what they did to Jules. Not ever.
Nick and Fin and Caro make a great trio, so I'm glad to see that there is a sequel.

Very much enjoyed this one. Enjoyed it enough to finish it in just two sittings. Mostly I like Nick I think that she was a very strong, capable, and compelling narrator. One that is hard working and self-made and that's something that I love to see in Cinderella re-tellings. I adored the steampunk aspects of this tale. And I loved the lessons that this book leaves people to ponder. I liked that Nick actually stood her ground a lot and wasn't a push-over. I think that it was neat that she was neither super sweet nor super scornful. She was refreshingly nonchalant and that just resonated with me. So many Cinderella stories either pick passive or aggressive so it was nice to see a more assertive Cinderella.

Ok, so this book wasn't terrible, a little slow, but it was overall pretty good. I loved the whole feminist theme running throughout of Nicolette working hard for her dream, but I didn't appreciate how some questions were left unanswered.

That was surprisingly really charming. I though it would be a straight forward retelling even with the magic and technology element but it had some very nice turns.

I loved that the ending wasn't love story perfect and that friendship is given more weight over insta-love. I enjoyed the surprise ending.oysterkatcher's review against another edition
