It was an okay book. It seemed way longer than it needed to be. There was a really cool dinosaur scene.

I almost gave this book five stars. This is crazy to me after feeling that the first half of the book was barely worth three stars. I was having trouble getting into the book. Somehow, about halfway through, the book got very good and the first half made sense and seemed essential. I ended up enjoying this book very much and the ending really made this book payoff. The character building was excellent and I now see why the Pendergast character has such a following. I highly recommend this book!

The Pendergast novels are a great popcorn series - it can be silly, it can be a reach, and some portions can feel very dated. But every time I finish one, I want to get immersed in the mystery of the next. I do have to say for the Cabinet of Curiosities specifically, I felt it was a little weaker than the later novels - if only because I wasn't quite so interested in the backstory for the house or the constant discussions about geography? Still very good to read, but compared to Reliquary before it (though not without its own problems) and Still Life with Crows after it (one of my favorites) it shines a little less brightly than the rest.

Continuing my romp through the Pendergast series. Well this was a fun one; who doesn't love an immortal serial killer? Pendergast has big Agent Dale Cooper vibes, from the kooky investigative techniques and openness to the supernatural, right down to a fascination (?) with Tibet. Does every one of these mysteries involve the New York Museum of Natural History because that's wild. How are staff at the museum shocked at this latest mystery when there was LITERALLY A MONSTER EATING PEOPLE IN THE FIRST BOOK? Also, the Big Bad being ✨gentrification and developers✨ is very 2021 in book trends.
