I wanted to love this one because it comes so highly rated, but I think the mother/child story hits a little too close to home. I also physically read this book after listening to a lot of audio books and had a hard time getting into it. I think I listen to too much news on this subject for it to hit as a new and horrifying story—it is absolutely hard to read but I’m maybe a bit desensitized by the real-life news

I couldn't put this book down. So nervous for Lydia and her son Luca at every point. Not knowing who to trust in their quest to go to 'el norte' and to be free of the violence and sadness they have left behind. Along the way they befriend sisters fleeing Guatamala. The controversy about this being written no a non-latisav hge

I really enjoyed this book. I've read a lot about trauma over the years and throughout this novel the author identified trauma, its effects and its universal nature. She did an excellent job.
I am excited to read her other books.

My rating is not based on the controversy. It’s based on the novel itself. I had to real trudge through this one to finish it.

I think of my students … English Language Learners. I always tried to be aware of the circumstances that brought them to my classroom … I’ve been retired for almost 9 years, but I still carry them in my heart. This powerful novel reminded me of those courageous teens and their families.

Everyone should read this story. While fictional, the portrayal of the migrant journey to America is one everyone needs to experience and understand, and this book does an excellent job taking you on the journey.

I know this book is very controversial, but I am glad I read it. I am especially glad for the recommendations of books written by Mexican writers, which I now want to read.
It is a thrilling and gruelling migrant story of a mother and son who must flee from a gang who have murdered their family.
