Great start to the new series, now I'm in for a sweetly agonizing wait for the rest of it over the next few years.

I've never read a Courtney Milan book. I've heard lots of good stuff about this author though and when I saw this book go up on Netgalley I about broke my finger requesting it.
I may need an Netgalley intervention quicker than I thought. I used to read historical romance, and I liked it at the time.

I think I've read too many stabbing, killing and porny mayhem books though. Because in this book I was just bored.
Judith is not a bad character at all though. I don't want to distract people from reading this book and series. It's def. a case of it being me. She is fiesty and really for a romance book she sets a pretty decent standard. She is taking care of her family after her father and brother are found guilty of treason. She has been selling everything the family owned and trying to get by.
I had nearly a thousand pounds set aside so my sisters might have a chance at a decent marriage. I know they won't find lords; I had hoped for vicars.

Vicars!!! Oops, sorry I totally have Joey from friends forever burned in my head when vicars get involved.

Juliet is having a hard time and she know needs Christian's help. Christian is the Marquess and helped in the conviction of Juliet's father and older brother. Who just happened to be his best friend.
There is doubts in Juliet and her sisters head of their brother's guilt.

But he is now missing and thought to be dead, so they just need those sisters married off.

This is just pure formula romancey for me. I think romance readers would probably enjoy it much more than I did because I'm totally known for reading things wrong.

This is the first in a long series, so I guess it makes sense that there is a LOT going on.

In true Courtney Milan style, there are layers upon layers: a love betrayed, political intrigue, class differences and social commentary, family ties, and lots and lots of kittens. She weaves it all together pretty well, such is her skill in writing and plotting.

I did struggle a little with Christian’s quite nerdy sense of humor, which is on display perhaps too frequently, and Judith’s sister Theresa’s antics, which landed just this side of unpleasantly wacky. I would have been happy with one of them, but again, I assume this is Milan establishing them as stars of their own future books.

Special mention goes to the older lady at the Bath Pump Room, who was hilarious and stole the show.

4.5 stars. This was really great! Not absolute top-tier Courtney Milan romance (I don't know that any romance will ever get me as much as Sebastian/Violet), but pretty close. The way Courtney Milan writes romance (and, particularly, feelings realizations/love confessions) just REALLY works for me for some reason.
SpoilerI could quote all the lines that made my heart clench but that would take forever, so just: "You sent me one letter after 8 years and I appeared on your doorstep within four hours." GOD.
All the history and tension/angst between Christian and Judith was so great. Second-chance romances don't always work for me, but this one definitely did. I'm definitely looking forward to more of this series, and I hope it doesn't take too long for the next one to come out!

Judith loved Christian Trent. Except, Christian Trent was part of the trial accusing her father and older brother of treason. After the trial, Judith is forced to make her way in the world with nothing more than her two younger siblings, her meagre savings from selling their possessions, and what she can make selling clockwork.

When Judith needs someone with clout to intercede on her families behalf, almost a decade later, she turns to Christian. Of course, things aren't what they appear and they rekindle their relationship.

I think the Brothers Sinister is a stronger series, but we'll see how this one progresses with the subsequent novels.

I marked this book as read, even though I DNF. I love Milan's books, so I was very excited for this one. But I just couldn't get into the plot, as evidenced by the fact it took me over a month to read the 75 pages. The interactions between the main characters also got on my nerves, so I decided to chalk this one up to personal preference, and move on to the next Milan series in my attempt to read EVERYTHING written by her.

All that said, what I read was well written and I'm sure plenty of people will enjoy this book!
