I’ve seen a lot of stories based off of and inspired by Alice in Wonderland and usually enjoyed them, but I’ve never read the book.  I thought this would be a great opportunity to it and other works by Lewis Carroll. This will be an unpopular opinion, but overall I found his works to be tedious, however I did get some enjoyment from Sylvia and Bruno. I believe his use of nonsense writing is the cause.  I’ve never liked what I call stupid comedies, think Dumb and Dumber his works resemble this too much.  The works that didn’t were kind of random, there was around 100 pages of word problems and their solutions, and quite a few games.  Overall this book is probably best for anyone looking for various examples of his writing.

I really enjoyed reading the introduction, as I knew nothing about Lewis Carroll. What an interesting life he had. I have finally found an introduction that is both interesting and informative!

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland
20th - 26th January 2016
This is one of my favourite books. Each time I read this book, it feels like the first. I always get something new out of it, & I don't think I'll ever be tired of reading it. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland are delightfully random, laugh out loud funny and I'd so love to have my own adventures there.

Through The Looking Glass
26th - 28th January 2016
Yet again, I know I have read this book before, but it was all so new, random and strange - I loved it! I also realised (probably not for the first time) that Disney must have cherry picked the best of both books to make the cartoon.

Sylvie and Bruno
28th January - 12th February 2016
Never in my life has it taken me so long to read so few words! I found this story so difficult to get into because it really felt like I'd picked up a book and began reading it from the middle. Nothing made any sense to me. That must be why this story is not as well known as Alice's Wonderful Adventures. I can't believe it was written for children! A basic summary is its about a man who follows and befriends two child fairies (that's not creepy - much...) Too bizarre for words - it just did not inspire me to pick it up and find out more. So it's with a heavy heart that I carry on to find out how Sulvir and Bruno is Concluded...

Sylvie and Bruno Concluded
12th - 17th February 2016
And thank goodness it is, because I struggled to connect with this story. I reef ally can't believe it was aimed at children! There were some quite interesting arguments, giving both sides of the debate, amongst the adult characters. Mixed in with frequent (bizarre & confusing) totally childish fairy encounters. My poor mind boggles. In other news, I found the authors thoughts on use of an apostrophe in the preface one of the highlights of this section...

A Tangled Tale
18th February 2016
I was quite good at mathematics in school (in the highest class), so I'd like to think back then I could have had a good go at undoing this collection of knots. Sadly I doubt I have the brain capacity, time or inclination to do so now. I almost gave it a go, but due to the fact I have been at this book slowly for a month, I just want done with it. The stories were slightly bizarre. But much better than Sylvie & Bruno. So I moved swiftly onto the answers. I'm so glad I did. I love the authors increasingly shitty analysis of the reader supplied answers to the solutions. I'm laughing out loud at it all, even if I'm not quite getting where the answers are coming from. Very entertaining! I can't remember if these were originally published in a periodical? From what I'm reading, it would make the most sense.

Novelty & Romancement
18th February 2016
Very random autobiographical tale?

Photographer's Day Out
19th February 2016
Amusing look at day in the life of an obsessed photographer.

The Legend of Scotland
19 February 2016
The weird old spellings made it really hard to understand (or care about) this story.

Wilhelm Von Schmitz
19th February 2016
What on earth was that all about?!? Oh well, at least I've finally got through this book :)

After my success with The Wonderful Wizard of OZ by L. Frank Baum read by Tituss Burgess, I decided to delve into more classic children's literature. Wonderland was the most obvious stop on the good ship Lollipop.

Sad to say, I didn't enjoy this one. Alice lacked all of Dorothy's of OZ intelligence, kindness, and humility. She is spoiled, uncaring, and completely self-centered. Yes, I know I'm talking about a child here...sigh. Still, how many times must she bring up Dinah the cat knowing it terrifies the little creatures in Wonderland and act shocked and put out when they run from her? 🤨
