I received an advanced reader copy of The Second Home from St. Martin’s Press via NetGalley, in return for my honest opinion.

The Second Home by Christina Clancy is a story about the unconditional love that comes from family. When Ann Gordon was in high school, she convinced her parents to adopt classmate Michael Davis. Ann’s parents and sister, Poppy, grew to love Michael. A terrible event happened while the family vacationed, at their summer home in Cape Cod, the summer that Ann was seventeen, which eventually led to the implosion of the Gordon family.

Now Ann and Poppy’s parents have passed away and all three siblings are estranged. Ann, Poppy, and Michael all have their own ideas about what should be done with the Cape Cod home. Can these three siblings learn to trust each other again, once Ann reveals the secret that tore this family apart years ago?

This was an excellent book filled with interesting characters, told from alternating points of view. The Second Home is available today, Tuesday, June 2, 2020.

Three siblings enjoyed a few summers on the Cape at a family home until one summer when a few events splintered the family and they were all forever changed. The parents of this family have passed and the three siblings must now reconcile to make big decisions about the original family home and The Second Home.

I may say this often on this blog, but it is the truth, I love it when authors put multiple points of view in one book and I love it even more when it is clearly edited, so the reader knows who is taking the lead in each chapter to tell their side of things! Ann, Poppy and Michael each get moments to tell the story and I loved seeing the events unfold through each of their eyes. Without spoiling too much, this book definitely has some hard scenes to read, but I think the author did such a great job taking these characters through some stuff and out the other side!

I remember seeing this book float around Instagram a few months back and I knew I had to request it on netgalley. A story about a beach house and sibling relationships? Sounds perfect! I read this over the weekend and it was just so good. I enjoyed the different points of view and timelines. I enjoyed reading about the sibling dynamic and how that changed over the years. The overall message that family is all you have in the end resonates strongly with me. I am so happy I requested this and got it! I can’t wait to pick up a copy in June.

This is a solid book about how misunderstandings and lack of communication can effect a family for many years.

A huge thank you to Christina Clancy, NetGalley and St Martins Press for the advanced readers copy! The following thoughts are my opinions alone.

Do you ever feel as though something is always pulling you to a certain place? Maybe a vacation home or a parents/grandparents home? Certain places have always held memories for me and particular ones are just so welcoming and make you remember what’s truly important in this crazy life we live. This novel brought those feelings back to me.

It centers on three kids, Michael, Ann and Poppy and then living in the cold north and spending their summers on the cape In a very appropriate cape style home. One summer gives way to a lot of regrets and chasing that “feeling” for many years after. The memories of that cape home are all that Michael can think of and want. Sadly, life has happened and a lot of pain.

The feelings of the beach and happiness are things I associate within my family. We don’t have a vacation home but, whenever things get rough and hard and we need to come together, we head to the beach. Even if it’s just for the day, it’s that place where our memories are maintained and happiness floats back in.

I really enjoyed this novel and it’s the authors FIRST one!! A huge kuddos to you Christina!! Brilliant story and I love the way you wrote it, different perspectives and even going back and forth in time, that’s how the characters were built and how you made them more understandable. It was a good read and I love the way it ended!

3.5 stars- rounded up. This was slow and a little uncomfortable to start. I almost gave up but it came highly recommended so I pushed through. The second half made up for my uneasiness in the beginning.
