I loved The Golden Age! It was a beautifully illustrated comic book following the political intrigue of a medieval kingdom. Although the premise is definitely something we’ve seen before, it was still unique and interesting. The colors used weren’t colors you’d expect to see in a comic book taking place in medieval times, but they worked surprisingly well.

The only fault that I found was the text used. It was most likely picked to fit in with the kingdom/medieval theme, but reading a digital copy of the comic, it was wicked hard to read and at some points, I had to sort of guess what the word was. It wasn’t a huge issue, but it did detract a little bit from my enjoyment while reading.

All in all, The Golden Age was an amazing, quick read and I would suggest it to any fan of comic books, Game of Thrones or medieval politics! I can’t wait to read book 2!

I received a free e-copy of The Golden Age, Book 1 from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Kulta-aika on sarjakuva, jonka lukeminen otti aikansa.

Suosittelen sarjakuvataiteesta nauttiville.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the free e-copy to review

Let me begin by saying I absolutely adored the artwork, I love graphic novels and the art alone kept me reading this even though I wasn’t that drawn by the story of the book. I found the story to be a bit chaotic, I liked the basic premise of the story, the royal betrayed and having to take refuge in a village of women. However, I just felt the author couldn’t decide where he wanted to go and kept getting sidetracked and distracted in the story, hence feeling it was a bit chaotic. It would have got 2 stars for the story but I loved the art so much it deserved 3 stars for that.

The art may be exceptional - layouts, coloring, line art, style - but the story is lackluster. I'll eventually read volume 2 for the spreads and palettes, but I'm not racing to do so.

I grabbed this graphic novel off of my cataloguing cart. I was drawn to the dynamic art--each page contains a set of panels with part of the story being told with a colour scheme: pinks and purples, or blues and blacks, or reds and blacks, but the changes are so subtle and gradual from page to page, that I had to flip back and forth to discover where they were happening, as I was pulled into the narrative. Tilda is a princess in a medieval land blighted by corruption. Her father dies and she is set to claim the throne, when she is overthrown by her younger brother (propped up by her bitter mother) and flees into exile with two loyal courtiers. Injured and isolated, she begins to have visions, of a future (perhaps) that she doesn't recognize or understand. She encounters characters along the road, including a sect of "utopia-ists" who believe in the once and future existence of a society (the titular Golden Age) where lords and serfs do not exist, and all are equal. Eventually she finds her way, through war and calamity, to a secret treasure, which her father had found years before, and had apparently meant for her to discover. She finds it, and it is revealed to her ... and that's where this part of the story ends. I will confess, the very illustration style that drew me in, also made me flounder through the narrative at times, as in many cases the drawings are bleak and merely suggestive, and filled with phenomenon rather than reality. But, the cliffhanger still left me looking around to find out where I can read the second half of the story.

I can’t tell if I liked this book’s story a lot, but its visuals are rather stunning. I’m not super endeared to any of the characters, but maybe that’ll come in the next book? Often, I had to take a second look at the artwork so I could better understand what was going on. The action scenes could be confusing and a bit jarring to look at. The style is beautiful, but the storytelling aspect of it needs work. The plot is interesting enough for me to want to find the next book.
