Re-read of childhood favorite.

I love Kel’s journey.

The previous books were an extended (and well-loved) training arc - this is Kel’s adventure - fighting evil, protecting the small, coming into her leadership, etc.

Good and evil might have somewhat of a simplistic view in this series, but the complex internal life of Kel more than makes up for it.

Love these books!

In contrast to the previous books, which covered long stages of Kel's training, this is more a single-quest novel, as Kel is given her first post as a knight, and then when things go disastrously wrong, her mission to make them right again.

I am completely enamored with Kel's arc.

It is so compelling, so heartening, and so distinct from Pierce's earlier quartets... Keladry of Mindelan has my heart forever, and I will be returning to her story over and over again, I'm sure. Long live the Protector of the Small.

It was amazing to see Kel as a true knight after experiencing her arduous journey to knighthood.

This books was quite a bit slower paced than the others, and surprisingly followed time consistently, despite previous books containing large time jumps. This contributed to the slower pace, and while I really appreciate getting her slice of life
at the refugee camp,
it was a bit tedious and times. Repeated ideas and experiences could have been edited out for a smoother narrative.

The ending of the series was so triumphant and meaningful.
To see Kel become known as the protector of the small was beautiful and made me tear up every time.
