First off the Translator's Preface is a 5-star read. More fantastic and gripping than many works of fiction I have read, all about Cervantes' real life. Fascinating and the highlight of this year-long slog.
The book vacillated between very good and enjoyable in the beginning of the first book, to horribly slow and repetitive. The beginning of second book rallied a bit, but then slid again into drudgery (though less so than the first book) and then ended abruptly. I wanted to like this more but just couldn't.
Read the Translator's Preface and the first book until the Prefect shows up and then quit.
