I guess I was expecting Shardlake to be sympathetic. Presumably he becomes more so in later books. Not sure I'll put in the time to find out.

Came here after that short tv series, which i enjoyed. The book delivers too, this was such a decent read ! Overall I really really like the main character and that we get his internal monologue and thoughts cause he is delicious, morally gray and slowly changing his worldview with the progression of the story. Looking forward to the following books in the series

A fan of historical fiction (Dorothy Dunnett being my all time favorite author) but had never read historical crime fiction... this one took me a little while to get into, but then got quite caught up in the story.

This was the first audiobook I listened to at 1.25 speed. I did this because it was all substance, no style—for me, at least. I did not relate to any of the characters, certainly not the unsympathetic Matthew or his ridiculous assistant. The only tolerable character was Brother Guy, who was only a periphery character. I would have enjoyed the book much more if it had been he who investigated and solved the murder. The mystery was very intriguing and I wanted to know the answer, which is why I finished it. The research was very well done, but for me there was no heart in this book.
