I don't normally read YA but this book was being talked about so much that I decided to give it a read.
I loved it so much I devoured the audio book in one day on a road trip. Cannot wait to read more from the author.

I can't say that Firekeeper's Daughter by Angeline Boulley is an enjoyable read. It's compelling. It's a tough read. It's a story that stays with you.

The main character, 18-year-old Daunis Fontaine, is Native American (Ojibwe) and white. After she witnesses a fatal shooting, she uses her knowledge in chemistry and Native medicines to help the FBI investigate a new illegal drug plaguing her town and other Native communities. Boulley expertly depicts the issues facing Indigenous people in the U.S. It never feels heavy-handed because the characters are more than just their trauma. More than just their grief, anger and sadness. There is love, humor, inner pride, loyalty. And that is what drives Daunis to uncover the truth. And as we all know, the truth hurts.

The Obamas have optioned "Firekeeper's Daughter" for a series on Netflix. Boulley's follow-up is "Warrior Girl Unearthed." I look forward to both.

This book was gripping and stayed with me throughout every break I had to take while listening to it, whether for a few hours or a few weeks on a trip. The characters were so rich and deep, so passionate for their culture and community. It made my heart wrench, break, soar, everything in between. The author, and thus the narrator, put such thoughtful care into describing such complicated and sometimes ugly truths, and made me feel so deeply.

Definitely one to check content warnings for, as this delves into all sorts of potentially triggering topics.

But I can tell that I will be sitting with this story and it’s people on my heart and mind for a long time.
