With only 80 pages left, I could not finish this book. I cannot point out exactly what made me give up on it, or why, I just know that I had no interest in finishing it.

I loved the characters so much and I loved the fact that it's not just a typical love story. At first I thought "Okay! Another instalove story" but as I continued with the book it took another approach, The family, The friends, Dealing with loss and Dealing with life itself. The ending was just what I needed. Overall it's a great book and I highly recommend it.

When We Collided is colourful, exuberant and lively at first. Vivi Alexander is a character you know you want to meet, who intrigues and encapsulates you with her fashion sense, her zest and her brilliant energy. And when she collides with Jonah Daniels and his grieving family, they seem to complement each other in dealing with grief and loneliness. But Vivi hides a dark secret - she suffers from bipolar disorder. I was intrigued while reading about what happens to a bipolar patient, and how it affects their life. It is a beautiful story of facing your fears and dealing with how your life will change. I admired Vivi and her zest and courage, while sympathising with how she struggles with the voices in her head. It is an eye opener of how these patients suffer, and I enjoyed reading the twists and turns in the story.

I loved this. Every heart-pounding, heart breaking word. Vivi and Jonah were so well-written, their voices so distinctive, and I absolutely adored and hurt for both of them. This book is packed with such heart and wisdom and emotion and I recommend this to you. Yes, you.

Well, that was a whirlwind.

When We Collided is my first experience with Emery Lord and I enjoyed it. I’m not sure that I’ll hurry to read her other books, but I loved this one.

Vivi Alexander is recouping from a serious diagnosis in a small beach town with her artist mother for the summer. While being the intelligent, creative, vivacious young woman that she is, Vivi meets the handsome townie Jonah Daniels… and his five siblings. As Vivi learns the heartache that’s permeating the Daniels family, she finds it harder to keep her own secret under wrap.

I’m not sure how many YA authors deal with mental illness in their main characters, (I’m new to YA) but I think Lord did an excellent job with Vivi’s character. You could tell from the onset that Vivi was more than just a hyperactive, eclectic, outgoing intellectual—she comes off as almost manic. I appreciated the dialogue at the end of the book concerning Vivi’s acceptance of her disorder and trying to find the right set of treatments so that she could continue to live a happy life.
The revelation that Vivi had been hiding her diagnosis from long-time friends is also something I thought made the book special. Vivi’s diagnosis explained a lot of her previous behavior, but she still wrestled with idea of telling her friends or fleeing the entire situation, as, I can imagine, most teens with a new mental disorder diagnosis might.

Lord explored the emotions and availability of someone who is in a spiral well, and the care in which Jonah handled finding out about Vivi’s disorder is comforting to the reader.

Vivi and Jonah’s relationship is a typical fast-paced, teenage summer romance, however, and I liked the awkwardness of their opposites attract dynamic.

On the other hand, I could have done without the deadbeat dad aspect of the book. I think it would have been a stronger piece about living with mental illness, if Lord had explored a less harsh trigger (besides the fact that she wasn’t taking her medicine); however, it is trigger that flows with the books storyline.
