If you have a particularly fragile emotional state do not read this. This book threw me into a mental health crisis.
The experiences in it are valuable. Ruth Wariner's childhood is fascinating, but gut-wrenchingly tragic and infuriating. I have nothing bad to say about the writing or the book itself.
But please, read with caution and seek help if you are going through a crisis.

A compelling memoir of the struggles faced during the author's upbringing as Wariner fought to protect herself and her siblings from the environment in which they were raised. The efforts Wariner went to so that she could look after everyone, despite the conflicting messages surrounding her touched my heart. It captured the importance of defining what family means to you on your own terms beautifully. This truly was an insighful read of what life is like when things seem as if the world is against you and the effects it has growing up in that environment.

Got this recommendation from TikTok and went in mostly blind, but was pleasantly surprised. Ruth writes like a friend telling you a story and it’s something you need when reading about this topic. I finished it in one sitting and can say it’s a book I’ll probably never read again, but in a good way.

Crying score: none, but I felt it in my heart and the pit of my stomach.

A painful and familiar story of a formerly FLDS member.
