This story is hard! Not for the faint of heart! Absolutely sad and disgusting how people can be blinded by a cult and darkness and truth.

A story that needs to be heard to honor the victims and those who have escaped this horror.

Memoirs and stories like this one of Ruthโ€™s captivates me! What resilience and bravery! May each one find true freedom and Godโ€™s love as each still is finding his and hers way!

TW: abuse, negligence, suicide, child death, polygamy

- Very interesting and extremely powerful, a testament to what humans can endure
- Wariner really set the scene and I found her writing to be vivid
- Wariner writes in a way that does not demonise those in her life that wronged her
- I grew to love this family and was emotional when it was over but even more emotional reading the ending

I love it when I find myself driving the long way home so that I can listen to just one more track. The Sound of Gravel was compelling, poignant, and fascinating.

The epilogue made this a 4 instead of a 3.5 for me. Big trigger/trauma warnings in this memoir about a fundamentalist-Mormon group practicing polygamy in Mexico. It was honest, very disturbing, and heartbreaking. Ruth was able to breath so much light into her love for her family while writing about the horrors she and so many other children endured at the hands of her step-father and her community. Ruth is the definition of survivor.
