Factually this story has no similarities to my life what so ever . And yet it resonated so deeply with me! I'm so grateful for this book. It's a must read.

I laughed. I cried. I laughed and cried at the same time. I have always thought Alan Cumming was a fantastic actor. Now I know he is also an amazing individual. This book left me feeling I know him well enough to greet him with a giant hug should I ever spot him on the street. The poor man.

I enjoyed this memoir. This book was one of the better written celebrity memoirs that I've read, and I enjoyed learning more about Cumming. It could have stood to been edited a bit more (some parts were kind of repetitive, repeating the same exact words/phrases a few chapters after they were first mentioned), but overall it was good. The first third of the book may be difficult to read for survivors of abuse. As a parent, it was incredibly difficult to read what Cumming was subjected to by his abusive father, so I can't imagine trying to read it if I had actually gone through a similar experience.

I highly recommend listening to the audiobook of this. The story is interesting and well presented but the addition of the author's voice reading it and conveying the emotions he felt is really powerful. I'm also biased and always prefer listening to memoirs read by authors so keep that in mind... :-s
