This was the first manga I read by Junji Ito, my favourite mangaka of all time, and on the third reread it's as powerful as ever. No Longer Human delves into the darkest parts of the human psyche, charting the unfortunate life of Yozo Oba, a damaged and deeply flawed individual who digs himself into a hole so deep it seems impossible to get out. Junji Ito's art style compliments the narrative beautifully, with some truly nightmare-inducing imagery. The manga also touches on the life of original author Osamu Dazai, with Oba and Dazai coming into contact at a crucial point in both their lives, and then again shortly before the end of Dazai's. A gripping story where just when you think things couldn't possibly get worse, they always do.

( this is coming from a person who didn’t read no longer human by Osamu Duzai)

This book tackles a lot of disturbing and uncomfortable themes that I want to make aware of. I personally did not enjoy reading or thinking about some of these themes in which Ito covers, but I do appreciate his unique style in Manga.
This is my first manga book and I will say the pictures were indeed engaging, I just wasn’t comfortable in reflecting on the ideas being shared. I will say, this book brought a new perspective on how I pick books around the horror and melancholic genre ( if melancholic is a sub genre). I now know that I have triggers in certain ideas that this book made aware of.

Yozo Oba was a scum on this earth. He fooled with a lot of people which led to those people taking their lives. This man was hollow from the inside out. He grossed me out with his behavior towards women. He used all of them for his own gains. In the end, he got what he deserved. An empty hollow life like himself.

Was hard to read how utterly horrible the life of this character was. Even more so when you consider the strong possibility that it is a reflection of the authors life. To think that this entire story is possibly an elaborate suicide note is haunting. I feel like Junji Ito really added a lot to the story with his art style, and his changes and additions made it his own.
