I somewhat enjoyed this book, somewhat found it quite upsetting. The main character was very hateable but you also empathise with him to a degree(mostly in the early chapters when he’s a child/teenager).

It is also much less horror than I expected, far more just utilising horror and horror imagery to demonstrate mental illness/addiction and just horrible life choices.

The illustration was 11/10 as always with Junji Ito.

I've hit such a gnarly reading slump that I just need to scrap my CRs and start anew.

I've read the original book by Dazai and think it's fantastic. This seems like a very faithful yet additive adaptation. I plan on returning to reread and actually finish this sometime in the future.

Based off a autobiographical suicide note of a novel, this is a series of depressing moments following more depressing moments. It also has some of Ito's most visually stunning panels.

This was the first manga I read by Junji Ito, my favourite mangaka of all time, and on the third reread it's as powerful as ever. No Longer Human delves into the darkest parts of the human psyche, charting the unfortunate life of Yozo Oba, a damaged and deeply flawed individual who digs himself into a hole so deep it seems impossible to get out. Junji Ito's art style compliments the narrative beautifully, with some truly nightmare-inducing imagery. The manga also touches on the life of original author Osamu Dazai, with Oba and Dazai coming into contact at a crucial point in both their lives, and then again shortly before the end of Dazai's. A gripping story where just when you think things couldn't possibly get worse, they always do.

Not a big fan of the story or characters, but Ito did a good job bringing his style of horror and art to the story in a way that complimented the original (a lot of changes to the story too)

I did not finish No Longer Human because I lost interest.  All the psychological analyzations and questioning about humanity was annoying.  Other than that Yozo is just going around sleeping with a lot of women, drinking, causing trouble for other people, and seeing ghosts.  I didn't care to continue another 300 pages of the same self destructive behavior.  However, the art work was good.  Very creepy images and lovely naked ladies.  Glad I did not read the original.
