I read this one years ago on my own and now we have started chapter books with my almost 4 year old. We just finished this one and she really enjoyed it. She stayed engaged with the characters and liked hearing what happened to each of the kids who won golden tickets. It is a fun book to read aloud and we all found ourselves wanting just one more chapter each night.

If you’ve seen the movie(s), you’ve read the book, and that’s a good thing in this case. This book is light hearted enough to enjoy in just a few days (or less if you have the privilege to read uninterrupted), but also touches on deep themes that merit thought, such as poverty and character. I found it enjoyable to read for the first time even after many viewings of several cinematic interpretations, and I am pleased to report that though there were some variations from the original, the movies have done the book justice. I’m looking forward to rereading it with my kids when they’re older and more interested in reading books than eating them, which is not appropriate outside of Mr. Wonka’s factory.

While this is a classic I will continue to read at least once to each of my children, I do have some things I dislike about this book immensely.
First off, the formatting is horrendous. The paragraph structure is painful to read.
Secondly, there are some seriously heavy and sometimes toxic biases in this thing.
Lastly, the Oompa Loompa poems are excruciatingly long.
I definitely prefer the Gene Wilder movie version of this story, but I also like encouraging my children to compare and contrast the two.

My 3rd graders and I loved this book! I can’t believe I had not read it before, but so happy I did! I had a class set for my students to read as we went through each chapter with a novel study. We were practicing reading skills and there were no complaints! Every single day I would hear, “one more chapter?!” It’s what every teacher wants to hear!

This was so wonderful. I don’t recall ever actually reading this as a child, but I’m so glad I have as an adult.
