No rating. I don't know what I think about this one. I don't really have any strong feelings. I would recommend you check all the content warnings before you read, I just read the resumed ones and was not prepared for some... Disgusting descriptions.
Listened to it while cooking meat, didn't eat it after I was done.

Edit: this story has grown on me. I've been reading more of LaRocca's work and I'm really liking this kind of horror.

Beautiful cover, ultimately a very boring book that doesn’t live up to the hype nor is as disturbing as made out. No character progression.

This was pretty good and gross.

I thought I knew where it was gonna go based on the S&M relationship, but it was different than I expected.
The animal killing and mention of baby death kinda put me off. I also hate bugs, but the ending was great.

The book was really distressing to read.
The detailed accounts of maiming, animal death, and recounted gruesome events from the news will probably stay with you long after. However, there was some missed oppotunities. I feel that the rabbit eating their babies was unneeded, as well as the priest running over the cat, because neither of them add anything to the themes of the story.
They were unnecessary. Just for shock value. Other than that, it was okay. Idk if im gonna read it again, but we’ll see

This was unpleasant. I don't disagree with the premise of a bizarre D/S relationship, but the pace at which the relationship progressed was confusing. I also didn't think that it ended well, or resolved itself. This book was quite short, and for that it suffers from being annoyingly incomplete. I'm confused as to why the correspondence is part of a police report, because this also does not get touched upon. Overall, the big shocker was more gross than anything, but weirdly enough there was an online gross out blog called "blowfly"(huge trigger warnings for body horror, trauma, sex, blood , etc) which honestly reminded me a lot of this, so I wasn't the most original idea. I would be surprised if the author didn't gather inspiration from that to be honest.

Was it effective in making to me want to stab my ear drums so I didn’t have to listen to any more of the depraved things contained in this book? Sure, I guess. Did I have a fun time while listening to the audiobook? Absolutely not.

PSA: please read TW before picking up this book!!!!

I wanted to like this book so much more than I did. I can tell that what really took me out of this was the epistolary format. There’s absolutely no relationship development - you can’t even tell they’re becoming enamored with each other before it jumps to the unreasonable.

I understand that both of these people are clearly mentally ill but even before the severity of that was revealed to us, I couldn’t follow along with how fast they were moving. If the initial messages had a flirtier tone or something that actually hinted towards attraction or trying to know each other, I could have been more on board but they barely said anything. If I could sense more attraction in the early interactions, I feel like I would be less irritated by the progression of events and more invested in the breakdown of the characters.

The second half is decent -
I really wasn’t expecting that she would die by her own hand and it’s interesting because the way it’s written makes you think “oh this girl is so dumb, she deserves to get killed if she just walks back into this after seeing how sick of a person this is”. It was interesting to discover that she was actually the more depraved one.
The concept is interesting, I just don’t think this format was executed in the way it needed to be for this story to be as engrossing as the author probably wanted it to be.
