This has all the things I love and hate about American literature. What I loved was that Steinbeck writes brief descriptions that flood your mind with a visual, dialogue that tells you a great deal about people, and foreshadowing so engrossing you don't see it happening. What I hate? No one is going to live happily ever after. That said, worth the read, at a concise 105 pages or so.

"I seen hundreds of men come by on the road an’ on the ranches, with their bindles on their back an’ that same damn thing in their heads. Hunderds of them.
