A great sequel to Half A King! Thorn is the 'strong female protaganist' that fantasy really needs - she's REAL, she's flawed and she gets good by working hard. I loved her. I'd actually rather like to draw her!

This book felt really slow paced but it could be because I did not enjoy it.

We learn about new characters in this book and even though Yarvi is still the MC, I forgot he was in some parts because it was so Thorn heavy. Which, I really could not care less for her.

The writing was not bad but the story was just linear and boring to read. I’m hoping this is just a “middle book issue” and then the final book after this is great.

4.5 stars really, not 4. Thoroughly enjoyed the first shattered sea book but this one is better still. I have been a fan of Abercrombie for awhile, having read the first law trilogy along with others set in that world. The shattered sea trilogy is known to be more of a young adult series and it does this well. It is still typically Abercrombie with the characters having, for the most part, a terrible time of it and the events and stories are still brutal. But with the grimdark and graphic side of things turned down a notch. Yet for someone who love the gritty, graphic Abercromibe writing, these books are still incredibly enjoyable and it does not feel as though they a less because of it. Thoroughly enjoying this series and looking forward to the next one. The next thing I mention is something that really won me over, however it is a major spoiler so I will hide the review because of it and also give this warning.

*** INCOMING SPOILERS ***

One thing that I was slightly nervous about with this book from the moment the prophecy that no man can kill Grom-Gil-Grom, was that the story would go down the route of a female character breaking this prophecy. This is something that I am quite done with as I think it has been over-used. So I was incredibly pleased to see Abercrombie twist it round so that the prophecy did play a part in this way but it was not fulfilled. I had expected (and hoped) that Abercrombie wouldn't go for something so cliche but at the same time it was niggling at me that he might. In the end, the way he dealt with it was excellent and left me completely satisfied with the ending and relieved.

Just as good as the first book. Thorn is an excellent character - have bought the third book and hope to have that finished in under a week. This book is highly recommended

A good book! Compelling and I liked the two main characters.

The development of their romance was so painful to see! They’re both so stupid but I’m glad it worked out.

I do have to say I knocked a couple points of for John Keating’s narration. It was quite stunted I felt. He had four accents, three he was actually decent at, one he was very bad and that’s the one he chose to give to the main character. One of true grit and determination and he gave her a voice that honestly made her sound like a bumbling fool. Really disappointing. Not to disparage the West Country accent in any way, but John Keating cannot do it very well at all.
