Lena and Campbell, one girl black the other white, are thrust together in an attempt to survive after a deadly riot breaks out at their high school football game and then spreads into the town. The story alternates between their two POVs as the girls depend on each other for survival. I liked the story, but I was annoyed by the sub-plot with Lena and her boyfriend. It wasn't really resolved and distracted from the main story.

It was an interesting novel that offers a glimpse into what riots in the United States might feel like. I enjoyed what the novel tried to do, but I felt like it fell short of its potential because it was scared to be too optimistic or pessimistic putting it somewhere in between.

Sometimes, the characters also were quite strange reacting to situations in very unexpected ways that seemed like jumps in such a small book. There was also no character development which one would assume would happen in this context.

The writing itself was fine, but strange at times with internal dialogue being substituted for description. Overall, I think a few good editors could have really made this into a masterpiece, so I’ll be looking forward to what the authors come up with in the future.

After a few days of reflection, I’m dropping a star off my rating to 3.75 stars. I really like the story, and think it’s so important. The writing was underwhelming. So I like the story, didn’t love the book.

This would be a great selection for a teen book club. I think I would have preferred listening to an audiobook, but didn't have one available. It took a bit of effort to suspend disbelief, and I never really connected with either character, but the plot was interesting enough that I wanted to know what would happen next. It's definitely some heavy (and timely) subject matter, and has believable escalation from fight to riot.

It all starts one Friday night at a game, Campbell is stuck in the concessions booth and Lena is just getting through the night till she sees her boyfriend Black. All goes pear-shaped when a fight breaks out infront of the booth, the fight escalates quickly involving gunshots and injuries. Lena and Campbell need to make their way out and to a safe place, but all they seem to run into for the rest of the night is danger, rioting, looting.

Lena and Campbell's story is about race, the inequality that one white girl and one black girl face. It's about their own assumptions of each other but it's also about a story of putting their differences aside to survive a terrible ripple of events.

This is such an amazing story, fast paced and keeps you turning pages and wonder what's about to happen next.
