This was an overall great book - but not a book that changed my life. Not a book that I'll read again. It was simply good- something I enjoyed but wasn't salivating to read. I enjoyed the track element of the story and I liked how this duel-perspective was written.

I think this book had a very impactful message that needed to be said to the world, but I just didn’t like the way it happened. The concept of two authors working on a book is very nice, and I like the fact that they made each author write the character that they would relate most to (regarding race). However, I just felt like they could have done so much more with this plot. It was underwhelming, and I feel like the message they were trying to get across got lost in the process of writing.

They could have done more with the riot, police, looting, and so much more. They could have gone more in depth and made this book actually interesting and informative.

With all of this, I like how Campbell’s mindset changed in the end of the book.

A very good listen! Coming of age in a town where there are racial tensions that explodes into a full blown riot is not the easiest plot to write for a YA audience. A lesser skilled author runs the risk of either under developing the themes or overwhelming the TA. But these authors pulled it off like it was nothing.

I’m still not sure if the intention was to write a full length novel or a novella because it read like the latter.

The narrators did great too. Lena sounded like the girl I imagine Tiffany Haddish would have sounded like at her age. Campbell was sweet and adorable even if her naivety and ignorance was a bit irksome sometimes.

I particularly loved the way their budding friendship used as a medium to discuss the issues of interracial co-existence and friendships.

In summary, it was a short, sweet read. I 100% recommended.
