v solid book the fact that it opens with a life size plastic skull and a dog named kirby is fantastic and it just gets better from there. i really like the uses of magical powers and storytelling especially the vampire stuff. and the straight-baiting w jay and ellie. shoutout to that one line about her asexuality. and the great depictions of the land of the dead

1 extra life gained for the mention of the word 'asexual'.
Also, I am going to bring a zucchini to the next wedding I go to.

I listened to the audiobook and recommend that people read it instead. The narrator detracted. Most of the book felt like a middle grade book instead of YA although there were a number of deaths.
SpoilerFor most of the book, I was planning on giving it a 3.5, because it just felt young and predictable, but the ending was charming and won me over.
I also liked the magic and the stories of Elatsoe’s ancestors that were woven through it.

3.5 stars rounded up. If not for a couple little gripes, this would be a straight 4/4.5. Sick af world building and most excellent dog presence (among many other wonderful and scary things).

This was a pretty good YA book. I really liked the magic system and the urban fantasy elements. The dialogue was a little cringy at some points but other than that I liked it overall!
