It started off so strong but just really stalled and I felt like it was a bit more work to get into than I like.

Interesting setting and premise, but didn’t feel a connection with the characters strong enough to really hook me in.

This book is ethereal, scary, beautiful and sad. And I loved it.

I had not expected to like this book as much as I did!  set in a world where "talents" were strange and horrors were unfolding, Ordinary Monsters gave us a story that illustrated the grit of women and children who were in it to save not just themselves, but the world around them even when that same world might not have embraced them back.

The story is well written with interesting characters, but I just could not get into it.

Definitely a top book of the year for me.

Sure it’s chunky (almost 700 pages), but it is so well written and so captivating that you fly through it. The author usually gets a couple of things to happen in each chapter at the same time so you’re bouncing between this and that but in a way that isn’t confusing or annoying – it actually enhances the chapter. There were also multiple battle scenes that played like a movie as I was reading – teetering back and forth between different parts of the battle and engaging you in all sides of it at the same time. Specifically, the epic train battle scene and the last chapter where all the remaining characters split up in combat.

The atmosphere was dark and haunting, perfect for this time of year. I’ll be recommending this to everyone who is open to fantasy until I have no one left to recommend it to.
