I loved this book so much. Great, memorable characters, fast paced, unputdownable. And I learned about a place and people I didn’t know much about before. I learn better if something is in the context of fiction. I knew about NAGPRA and the struggles indigenous people have had, but this book brought it home and gave it a face while still being fun (and funny) and touching.

I loved the first one. The sequel was good but the pacing was a lot slower. It felt a bit repetitive and stillted at times.
The characters were well balanced and the plot was good. The merit in this book really resides in the research and way the knowledge about NAGPRA was treated and brought. I learned so much, it was fascinating and gut wrenching at the same time. I felt as though I was being invited in continuing my education in life on Sugar Island and am thrilled about it. The only thing I would add is that I did feel a little lost at times when I read in ojibwebemowin. It would be nice to hav you some sort of lexicon or glossary at the end of the book to refer to.
Miigwech for the list of further reading as well.

Hard for me to pin what didn’t work for me. I think the main character has a lot of anger and I understand why. But also kind of wild choices are made that don’t sit well. And then takes such a turn.

It can be a little stilted and disjointed at times. As you get used to the author’s writing style, the story starts to flow a little better.
