‘Love and Virtue’ raises so many thoughts/questions/observations on the state of Australian society, particularly that centre around university culture. It take the idea of “Australian masculinity” (as referenced in the book to being all ‘girls, beer and footy’) head on and asks what are we willing to excuse and where do we start calling out behaviours.
Having gone to university in Australia (albeit in Melbourne, not Sydney) I was able to relate to the world the Diana Reid describes. The mix of people from different circles is always going to draw conflict, regardless of surrounds, but in setting the story in the world of universities, this aspect of varying backgrounds is magnified.

A very realistic look into modern Australian youth culture and society !

My feelings around this book are complicated, I note that Helen Garner is quoted on the front and I feel like this book is very similar to the Second Stone. This book also oscillates from great writing to terrible writing, which leaves the reader feeling whiplashed. The conversations it sparks around consent, power, and story telling are all very important however I do feel they get lost in poor writing and one dimensional characters. I will say as a younger Australian, I do love the language used, it feels relatable and current.

If someone ever asks me what it’s like living on a uni campus in Australia I will give them this book and tell them to make a decision based on that. Whether they see the fun and light of the party culture or the dark and unethical parts of it is up to them. This book hit so so close to home and I was absorbed by the story

“There are no facts, only interpretations.” - Friedrich Nietzsche

Many of those who will read Love & Virtue may find it is a feminist story, others may find it a story on ethics, morals, others may read L&V and look back on their 1st year of uni with fondness.

I found this a very easy book to read, parts of it were predictable and cliche. Unfortunately, I found L&V a story of shallow, insecure, selfish, immature entitled characters, who seemed to have never transitioned from high school into the more serious decision-making person you become in uni.

While the storyline is going on, you do start to think what is ethical, right, wrong, and when is it time to stand up and say something, especially as a female. I do applaud the book as it tackles a confronting theme, and that it creates multiple discussion points for men, women, adults and young adults alike.
