The first half of the book was repetitive and slow paced, but I enjoyed the second half of the book

I can't believe I finished this book
The ending was Not. Worth it, made me go from a 1.25 stars to a solid 1 star

I’ve tried to listen to this last year & found it dull. Fast forward and I wanted to give it another shot, but I chose to read instead of listening to the audiobook. I loved it! I could hardly put it down until I could finish. It has a slower pace, but the amount of character building … it was just phenomenal. I wish there was a “happily ever after” because I love those, but it would have been far-fetched & stretched at best.

This book had far more depth than I expected. A young woman from a "good family" that has fallen on hard times is married off to a rich bachelor in 1600's Amsterdam. He's completely disinterested in her, but buts her a cabinet which is basically an extremely luxurious dollhouse. She contacts the mysterious Miniaturist to furnish it. She is stuck with her husband's controlling sister (who is not interested in giving up her control over the house) and the household staff, a young white woman and a Black man. The leadership of Amsterdam is extremely religious and conservative, outlawing everything from homosexuality to owning dolls (even gingerbread men). This unusual household is impacted by the social and legal conventions while prophetic miniature items continue to appear at the doorstep.

TW: violence against gay people, racism.

1) this book has so much casual trauma surround gay issues. It’s really fucked honestly at how nonchalantly it condemns a character to queer character to death. Felt very 2014: new enough to have a queer character and Black character, old enough to give them no joy or dignity.

2) I loved that this book had strong female characters, butI found it frustrating that Nella and Marin lived so neatly in their female roles without any complaints about their lot as women. All Marin and Nella ever care about is procreating and being wives. Why does no female character in this book have agency?
