This book literally makes you feel like you are in the Bartholomew yourself; I read this book really quick, I flew through it and was amazed at how fast I was getting through it (it took me 2 days to read this and if you can probably get it done in a day if you wanted to) The only other Thriller I have ever read was The House Across The Lake by Riley Sager and that was a five stars and there were constantly plot twists and I loved how I never knew what was coming, with this book there were only like two or three times when my jaw dropped, whereas in the house across the lake that constantly happened. I still didn’t however predict the end. I was kind of disappointed in the ending though, I was hoping for something more. In The House Across The Lake, there was ghosts, and I didn’t think the story needed ghosts, but with this book there was so much potential for ghosts, and how they keep saying that the apartment is haunted. I was hoping for ghosts. I still liked this book, I just wish it were something more.

Wonderful, morbid, addicting and OPPRESSIVE. Reading Sager is like entering a fugue state and then feeling disoriented for hours once the story is over.

Okay… so you know how after a while you become confident in guessing plots because a lot of books are predictable and then you’re like: “Oh shit, what the hell just happened?”

THAT is what happened to the gal right here.

Jules is broke AF. (Let’s keep it PG)
She recently became unemployed and on the same day got her heart broken by the man she loved. (You can imagine already)

Tired of sleeping on her best friend’s couch, tired of looking for jobs, she finally sees an advertisement for an apartment sitter in the same place she use to dream about when she was little.

The rules are simple. Do not disturb anyone. Do not bring any visitors and you can never spend a night away from the apartment. Follow those rules for three months and you get $12,000.

After deciding to go through with it, she get to know the rich and famous that live in the building. Only to quickly find out that there’s something weird going on in there.

The Bartholomew has a bad reputation around due to the many tragedies that has seen over the decades.

The friend she managed to make there, another apartment sitter, goes missing and while trying to search for Ingrid, Jules discovers that Ingrid is not the first apartment sitter that has gone missing from The Bartholomew. Something really bad is going one and Jules is not ready for the answers.

This freaking book had me guessing the whole time. Another favorite for life. The ending is so shocking. I seriously was not expecting the twists.

4 for the idea, 2 for the execution.

Jules goes for a too good to be true job apt sitting at an old money, famous building in the upper west side NYC, next to The Dakota. 3 months of staying at the apt room and bam, 12k. Obviously strange things happen, and it’s almost instantaneous.

I appreciated the twist. In fact I thought the twist saved the book. The writing, however, felt flat, the characters one dimensional, and the sheer amount of missed opportunities were staggering. The concept is very creepy and it could have been built up, created more atmosphere, I mean it’s an old building, why not lean into it. I should have creeped out by the book, I should have been afraid to read it at night. Unfortunately, it just happened.

I’m sure with a good screenwriter this could make a great mini series.
