Read the whole thing in a day because I couldn't put it down. This is a literary mystery set in Mississippi about a woman who returns to her father's hometown to find out the truth about his death. Officially it was ruled an accident, but the reaction of locals (including her own family members) as she investigates makes it clear there's more to the story. I was totally sucked in--so atmospheric, I could practically feel the sticky heat of the South as I read.

When I picked this audio book up, I expected more of a mystery, but I ended up really enjoying this one. It is a tense, lyrically written story set in the Delta with an interesting cast of characters.

I really wished I liked this book more. The issues of race brought up are so important, but I just truly did not enjoy the writing style.

I expected more of a mystery, but really enjoyed what this book turned out to be.

One sentence synopsis: Billie returns to the Mississippi home where her father had a fatal "accident" 30-something years ago.

It is haunting that many of the themes (race, truth, honor) discussed in this work through events in the 1960s and 70s are increasingly relevant today.

I stopped reading this book. My book club reads books that are being made into movies. I was listening on kindle-it May have been better if I had a Paperback. Not sure in that.

But it was a boring audio book. It isn’t unusual for me to have multiple books in progress, but I decided this morning to stop this one and start something else in my car-that’s where I listen.
