I just think this book is really great. I loved it as a teen and I love it now. If I'd give it any flaws I'd say that it obviously only focuses on the plight of white young men in the 60s. There are also some regressive language used.

A classic for a reason! It’s a little juvenile but it’s supposed to be. Lots of heart. I’m gonna go read fan fiction about Dally and Johnny and wonder if the icon herself wrote it.

It's a do the play in middle school and see the musical version over the summer to finally read the book pipeline. I want more stories that recognise teenage boys' vulnerability.

Oh God! The outsiders. Back in 2007/2008, I had to read this as part of my highschool English class. I HATED the book. Not cause it was bad but because it felt so violent that it gave me nightmares, than I watched the movie and it felt so different to the book; oddly enough sitting comfortably throughout.

Recently I rewatched the movie and wasn't a fan of it. I thought it felt like it was missing a thing or two.

I'm pretty sure I've owned this copy for 17 years, it even has my hand written name written into it. So most likely a book copy that the teacher told us to keep. 🤷‍♀️

Either way..it's been a decade or so...so let's see if I struggle with the outsiders again.

Hmm..this book didn't freak me out like it did when I first read. Honestly, I think i felt underwhelmed.

You can easily tell its someone's first book, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. We all start somewhere.

But reading this it felt like chunks were missing..maybe it cause S.E Hinton is an outsider looking in rather than someone who was in on the action.

the outsiders by s.e. hinton is a heart-wrenching tale of boyhood, friendship, and sacrifice. it is a 10/10 must-read classic that you will not be able to put down!

WARNING: spoilers!

this book tells the story of a gang-like group of rugged, lower-class boys in the middle of a conflict with their preppy, higher-class counterparts. as they are fighting for the territory, we follow along ponyboy curtis as he tries to balance his older brother's expectations of him and his desire to be an integral part of their gang.

the plot reaches its climax when ponyboy and johnny (another member of his gang) are walking home one night when a group of soc (the preppy gang) schoolmates jump them and begin threatening them. it escalates to ponyboy being shoved into a body of water, nearly drowned by one of the soc's, when he is suddenly released. but when he comes back up, he realizes something terrible has happened. johnny had unalived the guy. long story short, they flee from the scene and hide out in an abandoned church outside of town where only dallas (a member of their gang) knows where they are. the novel ends with johnny making the ultimate sacrifice, dallas succumbing to the emotional toll his life had inevitably had on him, and the rest of the gang going along with their lives after the novel ends.

SPOILER ENDS

i definitely breezed through this novel quicker than most books i've read before and i would definitely recommend it to anyone who is interested in reading about boyhood, loyalty, and growth 🌟
