a rom-com that spends a lot of time reflecting on familial relationships and grief feels deeper than just the romance going on.

“People were complicated. They weren’t math problems; they were collections of feelings and decisions and dumb luck. The world was complicated too, not a beautifully hazy French film, but a disastrous, horrible mess, speckled with brilliance and love and meaning.” -January (Beach Read).
How true is that??!! This book was anything but a beach read, it was a rom-com with some heaviness. Set in the fictional beach town of North Bear shores, Michigan, we follow the Romance of main characters Augustus and January. There is a rivalrous history between the two. We get to follow January’s internal struggles and through her perspective, experience the effect of Augustus’ childhood trauma.
Even though this book wasn’t what I expected, I thoroughly enjoyed this romance. The evolution of January and Augustus’ romance was sweet and relatable with a small amount of spice.
There were some hard-hitting topics i.e., Cheating, death, and child abuse which made this book anything but the fluffy beach read you'd expect.
I’m a sucker for all things “bookish". Reading about books within a book made this next level for me. Being set in the Midwest also didn't hurt the likeability of this book.
Definitely check this out if you like all things bookish, Rivals to lovers, relatable content, and enjoy Romance.

Edit: The more I think about it, the less I like the book. I think Gus and January have some very faint likeable qualities but are overall boring and not well rounded characters. And the romance was bad. The more I ponder, I think the romance of the book makes it a worse book.
Ugh. I honestly don't even know where to start with this one. I wanted to love it. I have a book trigger: I cannot stand to read about cheating especially parent(s) cheating. And that is one of the central themes of the book, so this was a tough one for me to get into. The romance was okay, January and Gus are likeable characters but the cult subplot was boring.
