Absolutely stunning! I gained so much from the stories from the first read, so I can't imagine how it would be on rereads. Angela Carter's writing is exactly like how Emma from *emmie* described it: like reading velvet with your eyes.
Favorites were:
- The Bloody Chamber (for the story).
- The Company of Wolves (for the writing).
- The Lady of the House of Love (perhaps my no 1 favorite? Both the writing and the story were amazing).
Ones that didn't work for me:
- The Snow Child (this story was just ??)
- Puss-in-Boots (the writing was very different from Carter's usual style, and it just annoyed the hell out of me)
- The Erl King (I liked the ending but the majority of it was eh).
But overall I loved this collection so much and I think it will be one I reread often. I am so impressed by Angela Carter's prose.

this is on my 5 books everyone needs to read or whatever list and not just on a “i think this is really good” level but on a - “this will make you a better reader and make the entire experience of reading books more enjoyable and edifying going forward” level

Some of the fractured fairy tales in this collection are interesting takes on the originals. The title story is probably the strongest, and the whole book has the feel of an seventeenth or eighteenth century gothic novel. However, after the fourth or fifth story, the shock and awe is worn off and it fails to sustain throughout the collection.

If you'd like to hear my possibly controversial thoughts on The Bloody Chamber, have a listen to episode 36 of The Writer and The Critic

3.5-4 stars. I enjoyed several of the short stories, but especially the first and last tales.

Like a Sarah McLachlan song: you either feel swept away in Carter's overwrought prose and mood, or it all seems silly and over the top. I was expecting more of a twist on the tales themselves, too. These felt like retellings rather than reinventions. But I only could stomach the first three or four stories. Maybe they get wilder as they go on (but reading reviews here, I doubt it.)

First off, don’t let the childish cover art fool you; this is NOT a collection of short stories for kids. There’s plenty of dark violence and weird sex. I first read this book for a college class many years ago and decided to dust it off recently and reread it. I’d forgotten most of the stories, so it was like reading a brand new book. Carter’s writing style isn’t my favorite; she uses a lot of highfalutin language. The text is also super small on each page as well, it isn’t the most easy-to-read book. I found it starting to be a slough to get through each story towards the end because the language and text just seemed kind of off.
