If you enjoy police procedural shows that get you a bit emotional and kind of hint at romance on the side, this was a really good read. I enjoy watching shows like Chicago PD & NCIS, so this kind of fit right into that genre. We've got the murder of a cop as the fabric of this story, and uncovering the layers of the mystery kept me turning the pages, needing to know who did it and why. It really hits you at the beginning and the tears start flowing, so keep the tissues handy. You could definitely tell that the author knows her stuff when it comes to police work. I've not read any other books in the series, but it definitely stood on its own and I never felt lost or confused. Everything you need to know is contained in the story, even though this is book 7. I would recommend this story. It was quite captivating.
I received a copy for review. This did not affect my opinion.

Grab your tissue, this one is an emotional rollercoaster. Especially for those with family members that put their lives on the line, whether Law Enforcement, Fire or Military.

Count me in with the other duffers who had a hard time following the resolution of the plot. I wasn't a fan of the switching between first and last names to identify the players on top of the intricate detail involved in the murder mystery.
Spoiler At the end, I know someone (or someones) committed a crime and paid for it - which is a nice conclusion - but I'm not 100% certain how we got there.
I also wasn't too keen on how the romantic angle played out, but that's a whole other kettle of fish.

The author starts her story off showing that officers do have a life outside of work. But in an instant work can intrude. Ms. Arnold also shows that this is not a job for everyone. It takes a very special person who can put our lives above their own.

In light of recent events, this may be a hard story to read. It brings home how much of a family police officers are. And how much they’re willing to protect each other. They feel sadness, pain, and joy just like the rest of us – or at least most of us. I’m giving you a warning that this is a tissue book – just sayin’.

Madison Knight shows how hard it is to shut the job off. She has me questioning whether I would ever go to a place where violence has taken place. Madison shows the reader how much we have to respect the people that wear the uniform. Some people may not like what they do but can you imagine what our lives would be like without them.

What impressed me is that the author takes the time to take the reader through what happens when the police investigate a crime. She kept the scenes moving along and doesn’t bog them down with too much information so that the readers get bored. One great thing is that she got me out of the comfort zone of reading romances. She has so much going on that I didn’t even miss it. For me, the ending is open-ended which leaves the door open for the next book. If not for a tour like this, I may have never discovered this series and I can’t wait to see what Madison has in store for the readers.

I was not compensated nor was I required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

“In the Line of Duty” by Carolyn Arnold is the seventh book in the Maddison Knight series. Having never read the previous books in the series, I was a bit worried that I would not be able to follow the story. However, my worries were unnecessary. This book can be read as a stand-alone.

The story began on a sad note. Madison’s colleague and friend, officer Barry Weir, was shot and killed while off duty. The question on everyone’s lips at this point was, was this a specific hit or was it an attack on police officers in general? The men and women of the Stiles PD find themselves in a race against time to find the killer before he strikes again.

This story is a demonstration of what the persons who swore to protect and serve face on a daily basis. It also demonstrates the trauma and turmoil they face when one of theirs is taken down by ruthless criminals. This was a story of real human emotions that hit too close to home.
What stood out most to me in this story is the manner in which grief can either bring persons together or pull them apart. In this instance, I saw officers who could barely tolerate each other, working together to achieve a common goal. Also, I saw the toll it took on Madison’s relationship with her significant other.

The characters were interesting, but the one that stood out for me was Madison. She was a kickass detective who was fearless, strong-willed and tenacious. She followed all possible leads as she was committed to solving this case. She confronted everything head on. I loved how the author portrayed both her personal and professional life. It shows her struggling to gain approval from her mom who does not approve of her career choice. This showed that there is a sensitive side to her.
The story was gripping. I could not wait to find out who was responsible for the killing and what was the motive. There were so many possible suspects. Just when I thought I had it figured out another suspect was thrown into the mix. When all was revealed I was in utter shock as I never saw it coming.

This is my second time reading Ms. Arnold’s work and I am impressed with her writing style and how she portrays her characters. It is evident that she had done her due diligence before putting pen to paper. Her attention to detail was on point and the way she described each scene made me feel as if I was actually there.

This is a must read for fans of police procedurals.
