I wish I had the ability to encapsulate this book but I know I can never do it justice and it's so many things. Part memoir, part love story, part identity politics theory, it's like nothing else. As a cisgender woman I have limited personal experience of gender fluidity and this book schooled me. It's deeply personal and Nelson's descriptions of labour and motherhood are astonishing. I've read it twice now and know I'll return to it again.

absolutely brilliant. this was mildly confusing as the synopsis described this as “auto theory” but after finishing it i fully understand and agree. Nelson has taken her life experiences and reinforced them with other scholars and theorists in an attempt to rationalize and pay homage to her past selves. while the vivid birth scenes were necessary to the plot and i wouldn’t have her change them, they still made me shudder with the pleasant way she describes this grotesque experience.

post regretting motherhood and bluets. i found parts to be very difficult. the parts that moved me were thrilling and interesting. these topics are all very much in my world and therefore intimate. i want to give it more stars, for the parts i loved, esp the last bit, but because  such a significant amount of the book was lost on me, it loses stars. drowning in philosophical references.

Deeply moving and yet joyfully exuberant in its technical virtuosity: makes you realise what an incredibly rare pairing this is, in writing as in any other art. Beautiful, close to flawless.
