This was a well done retelling of Mulan. I love the way Melanie wrote the book. I love the way she incorporates scriptures. Mulan's father has been called to fight, but he died two weeks prior.  Mulan afraid of her mother being removed from their home goes in his place. She has no idea of how to be a man or a soldier.  With the help of a childhood friend she adjust to the life of a soldier.  Wolfgang is running the camp and is suspicious of Mulan even though he has no idea why. He knows she's loyal and A fighter since she saved his life during a battle.  They are both Christians and are drawn to each other.

After reading the book summary and the reviews, I have concluded that I will never pick up this book. I love the Hagenhein series and I love Melanie Dickerson's other novels but when you tell me you are going to take Mulan who is a character of Asian/Chinese descent and plop her in an Eastern European setting, I cannot and will not take you seriously. Also, a lot of the reviews on this book say that there are too many prayers in the book and that they distract from the plot. I don't have to be Chrisitan (although I am) to tell you that people don't appreciate (even other Christians) religion being thrown in their face when they are trying to relax and enjoy something (like read a book). Will skip this novel along with Orphan's Wish (retelling on Aladdin).

The first half of the book was exciting and interesting. The second half was just a little too slow. There was also more kissing in this one than the previous books in the series and I'm not a huge fan of that for YA. I think I'm just getting tired of the writing style of the series, which is feeling rather repetitive at this point.

I have watched all Mulan's adaptations. And now it's my goal to read all retellings. Ever since I was a kid, Mulan is my one and only princess. I see myself in her. I've never been girly girl and I questioned myself before because of it but ever since I've watched Disney Mulan, I've accepted who I really am ♥️

I am glad that I started with this one and excited to read more retellings.

An interesting and pretty good re-telling of Mulan. I’d really give it a 3.5, as it wasn’t my favorite, but I enjoyed it.

One of the best books I've read this year. Melanie Dickerson never disappoints. I've read all of her fairytale retellings, and I was looking so forward to reading this one. It was just as great as her other books, I couldn't put it down. Stayed up until 3am to finish it.
