CW: racism, school bullying, degrading graffiti

A really great book if you want something like HP (but without the terrible author)! I really liked the absolute seemless integration of sci-fi and fantasy genres (and I'm not usually into sci-fi).

def traces of middle school and overly cheesy final action scene thing but ive never finished a 400 page book so fast, despite the damaged paperback copy ; i do feel almost nothing except disappointment over the classic dylan thing and the hangover of a still present reading slump

What a debut! This was a fantastic start to an exciting new middle grade series where we are introduced to a world of supernatural beings and magic. Our protagonist Amari is just discovering this world alongside the reader and realizing that she is destined for great power. I loved the world building in this. It is primarily set in a school setting where kids are training to be a part of the "Bureau of Supernatural Affairs". We see all sorts of diverse characters with different backgrounds and abilities as they encounter various trials and threats to their world. I can already tell that this will be a new favorite middle grade fantasy series alongside "Nevermoor".

elements of hp and nevermoor, but with a good amount of "but i deal with this garbage differently because i've been discriminated against my whole life". which is a fantastic vibe.

If your kid is into Harry Potter and you don't want to pay Rowling, this book is IT. It's got everything you want in a kids book - great pacing, magic, family drama, touching emotional moments that help the characters grow... I usually struggle to finish stories for this age group, but it was a breeze. I might even read the sequel!

Absolutely loved this book! The world building, the characters, the magic system, the story, everything is amazing! I will definitely be continuing this series and also will be rereading it as well.
