Core concepts: 5 stars.
Writing style, especially repetition and padding the content: 2 stars.

Another reviewer got it right when they said it would have been better as a pamphlet. Happiest Baby was the same way.

Helpful reminders and explanations of what to expect with tots; ages 1-4. The book refers to toddlers as cave men, which is meant to be a lighthearted way to reframe their behavior in parents’ minds, but I think we can enact the strategies of the book without “dumbing down” kids in that way.

I skimmed a lot of this. I found it kind of condescending, to be honest, as if we don't understand our children's needs. Maybe some parents don't but the book read a bit rough for, I assume, a lot of people since the rating here isn't great.

My husband and I have talked to our almost 3 year old like an actual person since she was very little and we think it has seriously helped with her vocabulary and the way she talks today. This author wants us to dumb down our language and I find that ridiculous. For example, when my daughter fell off her bike the other day, I shouldn't have said "Are you ok? That's going to happen sometimes but you're brave and strong!" What I apparently should have said was something like "You fell off your bike and went boom!" No.

I've taught my child how to take a deep breath and calm herself when she is upset and then we talk calmly and hug. It doesn't happen every time but most. I thought I could maybe get some advice for the times it doesn't work but I didn't find it here.

The great thing about my kid, she generally asks what something means if they don't understand, even when upset. I understand that some kids aren't like that but I feel like if I took the advice from this book, we would be backtracking to when she was one.

I didn't find much in this book helpful. There are a couple of takeaways I'm going to try to implement but other than that I thought this read was a waste of time.

Even the things in this book that I don't think I would be any good at implementing sound like good ideas. My only complaint is that this does NOT need to be 300+ pages. When is someone going to come out with Cliff Notes versions of Karp's books?

I always feel that any parenting book only helps to put some tools in your tool box... although the tip that seems to works best for most parents is the one that sends Faris over the top many of the other strategies has been helpful...

I really enjoyed this parenting book when I read it and I thought that many of the ideas made sense. Parenting advice for typical kids doesn't always work with my oldest, so I never really implemented any of the author's suggestions. However, I should give the book another skimming through now that I have another toddler.
