I love me some Dean Koontz, but this is the worst book I've read from him. Everything felt thrown together and lazy, too predicatable, trite and left me feeling very little for the characters and barely anything after the end. A few weeks from now I won't even remember what it was about.

Ahhg. I was expecting scary. Instead, I just got misogynistic patriarchal sexist machismo crap. I'm a manly man and I do manly things and this is my beautiful girlfriend. Look at her, she's so pretty. Oh wait, midlife crisis, I need to go off on my own for a while. Me me me. All about me. Alright, story's over, she can come back now. I was too annoyed by all of this to really enjoy the psycho scariness of the story. Sorry, Dean, I really wanted to like it.

This has been on my TBR for the longest time and I'm using some reading challenges this year to try and get through my TBR so I choose this for February's buzzwordathon.
Overall this book was really disappointing, I don't really feel much for it apart from that it was pointless and a huge waste of time. I liked the reveal of what happened in Ryan's past but by then it was a bit late to leave me excited. I felt we had to get through pages upon pages of mindless, repetitive nonsense to get there. The part about all the twins etc was convoluted and confusing, not to mention all the stuff about the assisted suicide guy which was pointless. I also never understood the relationship between Ryan and Sam, Iike what the hell happened? I just don't get it. I wouldn't recommend as it was really quite boring.

I mean, I finished it, so I guess it might deserve two stars? But no, no, there's pretty much nothing good here. I've blogged about it already, but I'll point out that in the end it turns out that the entire first half of the book is a red herring, and the supernatural vs. non-supernatural questions of the book are so hard to pick apart that by the time you do it doesn't seem worth it.

Great writing- Dean Koontz continues to improve his spare, elegant, lyrical prose. The story however, left a lot of loose ends and built up to several things that never panned out. Weird plotting with not enough payoff.

Got this as a Christmas present from a relative who just loves [a:Dean Koontz|9355|Dean Koontz|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1487353807p2/9355.jpg]. I wish I could say I felt the same way.
