An easy, entertaining read.
This book was an easy read. I was at 90% before I even realized it. Great twists and turns. I'm in treaties about the world of Hex Hall. I wasn't really left with a burning desire to read the next book immediately, though.

I enjoyed this book, though I have to say it had so many elements of other books so I can't say it was overly original.
Children of magical parents come into their powers as they hit puberty...children of magical parents must learn to live in the non-magical world without exposing their true identities/powers...if they threaten to expose the magical community with uncontrolled powers, they must be sent to a special school...and of course there are groups of people out there who want to destroy/eliminate/expose those with powers for what they truly are.
So, our main character is sent off to Hex Hall by her magical parent (whom she has never met) since her mortal mother is not able to help her control her powers any longer. She is the social 'misfit". She develops crush on the token cute boy, the "cool" girls set out to make her life difficult, and of course her family has a secret about where their powers come from, and why they are so powerful.
So, nothing overtly original in the book itself, until the end twist.
But I enjoy her writing style, the characters are interesting, and the unique twist at the end really caught my attention enough to want to read the next book.

little too much “pretty girls with nice hair only talk about clothes and boys and must be evil” for my taste but a nice light opener to a YA magic boarding school series. Sophie’s just barely on the right side of not-too-annoying as far as first person narrators go and I think the right age group would eat this series up.

I've had this book for a while & it was further down on my TBR list but after finishing The Hunger Games, none of the books I started were really interesting. I opened Hex Hall on my Nook Simple Touch (shameless plug because I think it's the bomb!) and was sucked in right away! I LOVED this book! I love anything witchy, teen-angsty and set in the south. How can you go wrong?
Last night, as I was over 3/4 of the way through the book, enjoying every minute, I was in the midst of a great scene that made me wish I was a sixteen year old again. All of the sudden, I was like "HOLY SH*T!" My mouth dropped open then I yelled a few more colorful expeletives out loud. It was one of those moments where you feel like you were sucker punched in the gut!
I literally cannot say enough good things about this book. I LOVED it! I started on the second one and feel sure I will devour it quickly. The third book in the series comes out on 3/13/12 so I won't have to wait long for my next fix!
This book has definitely made me a fan of the author and her work.

Really loved this book! Some surpises, some small amount of character development, fun and witty repartee. Cute. Can't wait to read the next one. :)

I had fun with this book. It’s high middle grade/low YA chick-lit with diluted Harry Potter vibes. A guilty pleasure.

Briefly this book has made a spot on my online book shelf. The plot was interesting in a way that says "if you don't have anything better to read... HERE I AM!" I went into this book with a slightly biased mind having just came off of my Harry Potter book series hangover (now THAT'S a book!) Anyway, there were only a few things I actually enjoyed about this book.

This book starts with a teenage girl named Sophie. She lives with her mother (since her father left) and has always been a bit peculiar. She finds out that she is a witch and is forced to go to a boarding school for magical beings {Witches, Warlocks, fairies, werewolves, vampires, etc.} She initally hates it, but befriends the school's outcast (aka only vampire in the school) and develops a major crush on the school heartthrob. (classic chic-lit right?) Well, not exactly. Sophie learns that there are several organizations and groups that have one purpose: to destroy all Prodigium {Magical beings}. The worst is an organization called The EYE. Sophie discovers near the end of the book that she isn't a super-powerful witch, but a super-powerful demon. She also has a great shock in the knkowledge that her almost- sort of- boyfriend (aka school heartthrob: Archer) is a part of the EYE.
I personally loved the love interet and funny remarks. However, due to language and sexual references (none very extreme though) I had to give this book a lower rating than I would have liked. Some of the content just seemed inappropriate to me. (and that's saying something) However, besides that, I did enjoy this book. It just doesn't take a spot in some of my favorite books of all time.
