I loved this story about an Japanese living their ordinary life, discovering the beauty in everyday situations, and bonding with a cat. It is beautifully poetically written with vivid descriptions that leave just enough open to kick the imagination into gear. The perfect read while sitting in a coffee shop on holiday while watching people following their wee everyday lives with their own wee stories.

This just wasn't for me. I thought it long and a bit tedious. I don't think it helped that I had this idea of what the book would be about and I was really excited for that but it isn't what I got.

Not much else to say on the matter - not my cup of tea at all.

I'll be honest here: this book was entirely a cover & title buy. I've been drawn to books that have cats on the cover since the beginning of the year, and it's always an extra draw if the book actually happens to be about cats in some way. The Guest Cat was one of the books that I picked up earlier on in the year, but I honestly had no real idea of what I was getting into when I started reading it.

I didn't expect this one to feel more like a mini memoir about the author, his wife and the cat that managed to make a place for itself in their lives. It wasn't a bad thing and nor did I end up feeling like dropping the book at any point, but reading a slice of life novel about individuals who didn't stand out to me in any way that allowed for personal interest or connection meant that the overall experience was simply alright. It felt like a brief, slightly voyeuristic peek into someone's life, one that felt unremarkable on the whole save for the cute cat(s) in described in it.
