the ending is so what the hell and disappointing but the rest of the book is very enjoyable. I kept waiting for Vasya to be an adult and I'm frustrated she was 15 by the end, when this is labelled adult fantasy on some sites. I have some issues but overall I love the prose and the worldbuilding and I like the pacing, which is a common negative. I wouldn't have minded if Vasya stayed young in this first book but then remove the rushed romance.

Slow to get going, and the 3rd person omniscient POV bouncing from one character to another in rapid succession didn't work for me. As the book pared that POV down to two or three main characters, it felt much stronger. Then it absolutely stuck the landing. Hell yes.

The storytelling was enchanting. The prose was beautifully written and every scene was given the same care. This fairytale is a wonderful story to get lost in on a cold day with a cup of tea. You need barely any imagination for the rich text to come to life in your mind. The story told is also worth while and the protagonist is love-able and even the step-mother antagonist is someone to sympathize with. As always, it seems men create their own problems, but this was a fresh telling of that type of plot.

This was a quick yet lush read. I love folklore so this universe was very much my cup of tea. The men in this book are disgusting and annoying in turns, which checks out for that time period and in general. 

My only complaint was that it felt like Anna’s “power” wasn’t explored much, but then I saw the dreaded word on the digital cover: trilogy. Guess I’m strapped in for more, though I think I would’ve really liked this as a stand-alone
