Weird story. The more interesting passages and illustrations aren't enough to counter all the disturbing abuse heaped on poor Thumbelina.

Okay, re-reading favourite childhood fairy-tales as an adult is a tricky thing...
On one hand, you grew up loving them, but on the other... you understand so much more... and it's not always pretty. Like this story, for example. I remembered it as a story with a happy ending where a girl found her prince. But man, it has so many layers. We have kidnappings, forced marriages, characters with broken heart, insta-love, judging a character by its appearance and my personal "favourite" is when that handsome prince just changes out Thumbelina's name because it's, and I quote, not pretty enough for her. Merlin, this is insane... I think I'd hated this story if I read in originally as an adult, but I grew up with it, so I can't do that... Man, I have mixed feelings.

Uma linda história de descobertas, algumas aventuras assustadoras, e um final feliz. Fiquei me perguntando: por que sempre há alguém pressionando para que as mulheres se casem, mesmo contra suas vontades? Impressionante. Uma boa leitura.

Final book of '22!

I read this version, but it hasn't been added to Goodreads yet.

Loved the illustrations, absolutely stunning, but I have to admit that I love the plot of the '94 Don Bluth animation version way better.

Okay, cute book and all, but why didn’t she go back to her mother? I was waiting for that! Just imagine the poor mother waking up one day realising that the child she desperately wanted has been stolen, and she never sees her again, ugh heartbreaking!

Now this was a cute story! Surprised I'd never read it before now. I will have to read it to my kids.
